Target audience research

The first question we asked was whether the person actually watched movies. If they didn’t then the information for the rest of the questionnaire would have been useless. Lucky 100% said yes they did watch movies.

The next question we asked was ‘what makes you continue watching?’  The most common answers were if it if was good, or an interesting start. This tells us that we need to have a good beginning to the movie so we can get the audience to ‘into’ the movie. Other answer were ‘a good plot’, ‘hot actors’, and if the movie got a big buzz about it. All these help us by telling us what can make our movie so people will go and watch it.

The last question we asked was ‘what would grab you attention in the opening of a movie?’ For this question, we got sort of the same answers; they all liked it when something big happened at the beginning of the movie like; death, explosions, crazy people and something unexpected. Other answers were a good sound track and some good acting. This tells us that the opening of our movie needs to be eye-catching.

Director's Pitch

We have two locations; we have permission to film at both of them. One location had to be a big open field, that looked like the middle of no where. we needed a scary looking tree for the girl to lean against and a hedge to film behind. The other location has to be a house with a hot tub and the location we are using has one. We need a lot of resources to make this film possible including; Cameras, Dolly wheels, tripods, external microphones for outdoor filming. We also need to obtain permission from the record company to use there music. We will be emailing them shortly.

Charlie's Angels Deconstruction

Director:- McG
Genre:- Action
Certificate:- 15 suitable for only people 15yrs and over
Year:- 2000
Camera shots, angles, movement and composition
Zoom straight from Columbia advert and into movie. Zoom into a dolly from outside plane to inside the plane. The camera is following where the first character we see (bomber) is looking, High angle. Tracking shot moving from one character to another, point of view angle. Long shot to show they are on a plane, high angle. This is not giving any hints on who is the main characters or who the audience is looking for. Medium Close up on toilet door ‘occupied’ then opening and becoming ‘toilet’, medium close up of the chest of the character. Tracking shot as we are following this character (Indian man) from behind. Over the shoulder shot when flight attendant is blocking his way. This gives a centre view of the first class ticket. The camera is following the same character but goes through a different door to watch him at eye level. This gives the impression we are sneaking round to first class to see him. The camera makes its way to be in front of the characters and looking back at them, this angle makes it look like we are sitting with them in the conversation.. The camera is consistently moving and does a slight zoom out as they are talking, then the camera starts moving to an over the shoulder shot as it has a medium close up of the diamonds in the hand, tilt. This makes it look like we are siding on the Indian man’s side in the conversation like a friend would back up another against an enemy. Zoom in on the bomb to see the timer extreme close up and zoom back out again as an over the shoulder shot. Camera keeps moving to be another over the shoulder shot with the flight attendant. The camera watches him walk away until it is safe to talk again and then big pan shot back to the other two characters. Action shot and pan shot as the action passes past the camera and the camera at first watches it pass then follows the action, tracking shot. High angle. Camera watches them fall away out the plane, then a medium close up of their faces as they are falling, cantered angle to show they aren’t in control. A stationary shot of them fall pass a helicopter and then follows a character in black that jumps out of the helicopter. The camera tilts as it stops following the character in black and just watches them fall. The camera then goes back to watching the other two character fall. Tilt shot. And then medium close up of their faces. Low angle to high angle, a shot from above and watches the character in black aim where it is are going. Then another shot from the side watching them go left (like superman when he is flying). Another shot of the two character falling and not in control, cantered angle. A zoom in as the character in black falls towards the camera and a close up of her face. The character in black falls to the other characters but it looks like she is steering. Extreme close up of the bomb, cantered angle. Lots of action shots of them falling and of the camera look like its falling as well, this would make the audience feel like they are in the action. Lots of cantered angles to make the audience feel this is out of the ordinary. Body shots, aerial shots. A worms eye view shot of the three characters and the explosion. The camera falling and spinning makes it look like the camera is out of control. Body shot of Indian character letting parachute out cantered angle, point of view from bomber perspective. Point of view shot zooming towards bomber, close up of black character catching bomber character then letting parachute out. Action shot of speed boat driven underneath the character. Zoom in of the speed boat from aerial view, point of view shot, high angle. Long shot of the sea but a close up of the speed boat and Cameron Dias driving it. Worms eye shot watching the parachutists land from beneath them, low angle. Mid shot of Cameron Dias watching the parachutists. Wide shot of parachutist about to land on the boat, cantered angle. Then body shot of them actually landing. Medium close up of the characters faces as landing. Mid shot of Dias speaking. Medium close up of Lucy Liu taking her helmet off. Medium close up of Indian man landing. Wide shot of him approaching the boat and then a body shot of him doing it. Zoom in and then a mid shot of bomber lying on the boat, high angle. Mid shot of Indian man taking mask off, slightly low angle. Medium close up of the mask coming off. Mid shot of the three girls with arms around each other, this connotes that they are good friends having fun while on their job. A long shot of the boat driving away.

Editing

The clouds from the Columbia advert morphs into the clouds in the film. It makes the film look continuous. The filming of the outside of a digital plane to the inside of a plane makes it look continuous movement, the camera going through the plane window. This makes it obvious for the audience that something is going to happen airborne, and that will make the scene more exciting. The first bit of filming is a long take as it is roughly 1.00 minute long. When they jump out the plane, the plane becomes digital again and it almost hits them as they fall. This would connote danger. There are lots of short takes and it is made to look like continuous movement (match on action). This is to show the audience all the different angles of the action, this gives the audience more detail in what is happening. There is slow motion added as the character in black jumps out of the helicopter. And again in the close up of her. This is to show the character and if you know the actress then to show its her as well.  The special effects for the explosion are realistic as well as the character move according to the explosion. There is a take where the camera is zooming closer to the boat but looks like it has been fastened up like it is falling even though we have seen the parachute open. As Lucy Liu takes her helmet off and shakes her hair, it has been slowed down by editing. This would be to show that she is a very attractive woman even though she has done a very strong ‘male-like’ job.

Sound
Non-diegetic soundtrack music as the camera gets closer to the plane, the music is slow but anticipating to warn the audience something is going to happen. As the passengers are talking the music is still playing, the captain starts talking about turbulence. This also gives the audience an obvious idea that they are on a plane and it’s dangerous on the plane. This I am sure was edited on the take at a later date. Little bit of muttering from the extras but that could have been edited on as well. The dialect sound like it was diegetic. Sound effect as the camera zooms in on the bomb and out again. The zip sounds like it may have been enhanced to connote to the audience that it needs to be covered up quickly. The sound of the plane shaking because of the turbulence. Sounds like glasses are shaking. The dialect specifically refers to a movie that has been made from a TV series like this movie Charlie’s Angels has been. Meanwhile the non-diegetic soundtrack music is still in the background and hasn’t quietened down yet. Suddenly when the starts to be some action in the shot, the music changes to a fast up beat rhythm. This is to match what is going on, on the screen. The sound of the plane door opening while the bomber is shouting also looks like it is non-diegetic. The sound of the wind and the bomber shouting after they are out the plane are again non-diegetic.  Once the character wearing black has jumped out the helicopter the sound effects make her sound like a plane or a glider. This connotes to the audience that she can steer where she wants to go. Then a voice starts singing with the music ‘cus i’m alive’ this connotes that this is an adrenaline filled moment. Then when there is a close up of the bomb we start hearing it tick and that connotes that there is a time limit of this adventure and it is again very dangerous. This explosion sound must be sound effects but it is loud enough to shock the audience. This sound of the parachute opening must be enhanced or added on to show the audience that he is now safe. When we see the speedboat we hear it as well and as the two characters land the music changes from being up beat and adventurous to victory and completion. The music changes as we see the character in black be unmasked and to find out it was a woman. This would make audience be shocked of that fact and challenge the view of every day women. The music is happy and then we see the Indian man coming to land on the speedboat as well.  Once the Indian man is unmasked and a woman as well the music has women singing as well to enforce it.

Mise en scene
The clouds are very white surrounded by blue which is thought to where angels may live and then in the plane its contrast of bright red that connotes danger. A nun is in one of the back seats and this connotes god and goodness. The symbol on the wall where the blue is winning over the red might suggest the good winning over the bad. In one of the seats is a little kid playing with a ball and this shows vulnerability on the plane. A couple going into a toilet suggests that more than one thing goes on in the toilet, e.g. like changing in to an Indian man disguise. The back of the Indian man’s head and him fiddling with his neck connotes that it is uncomfortable there. The strange clothing connotes someone different from the rest of the people. He is throwing a ball up and down like the little kid was doing maybe to show the difference in vulnerability as he doesn’t look vulnerable. Him standing up and everyone else sitting down makes him look quite superior and respected. The spread out chairs, the wine glasses and big TV at the front makes the place look expensive. The purple carpet connotes this as well. The lighting from the window looks like the sun but when people are close to dying it is said that they see a bright light and this could be suggesting that he is near death. The two women behind have dark and light hair which could suggest the good and the bad. The turbulence makes the plane look even more dangerous and on the movie screen there is an action movie on it to imply this is an action movie too. There are sport magazines and ‘forbes’ magazines in the background next to the door to connote money and action in the movie. The sea makes it look like there is nowhere to go and jumping out the plane was a bad idea. When you see the character in black jump out the helicopter the situation looks more planned than it did a moment ago.The speedboat with Cameron Dias in a bikini makes it look like a holiday and connotes having fun. The white interior of the boat looks expensive and good which suggests the good has won over the bad.

Hot Fuss Deconstruction

Director:- Edgar Wright
Genre:- Comedy action
Certificate:- 15 suitable for viewer 15yrs and over
Year:- 2007

Camera shots, angles, movement and composition
Extreme long shot of first character (Simon Pegg) walking towards the camera, the camera is stationary. The character walks right up to the camera and shows his police badge. This would be to let the audience know early on that he is a police officer. New shot of his feet as he walks again in a fast pace. Medium close up of his upper body, tracking shot. Now a tracking shot from the side. It looks like a point of view shot from maybe a co-worker as it pans like someone is watching him. A close up of his shoulder and the strap showing his ID number and walkie talkie. A close up of his face while he walks. A switch from present day to the past of where he earned his qualifications.
Quick pan shot of men running in a training program which the voice over is explaining. Long shots of more training programs and past experiences. A close up of a exam he had to pass and him ticking answers. This connotes he is clever and good at his job. Close up of him closing his pen again to show efficiency in his job. A zoom out of him achieving his goal with a trophy. Lots of tracking shots and showing him doing his job. Close ups of his stern face connoting he is always committed to his job. Zoom in on his coach holding a stop watch when Simon Pegg is running. Fast pan shot to show he is moving fast. All the angles in this are forward or looking up at him to make him look more intimidating.

Sound
As the first credits and logos come up there is lots of different  emergency car sounds, non-diegetic at the moment. The diegetic sound of the automatic doors opening. The sound of Simon Pegg as he walks swiftly suggesting he is in a hurry. Non-diegetic voiceover as the character is explaining his life and how he got to be a police officer. The voice is dictating where he learn to become a police officer and the screen is showing flashbacks.
Editing
Big bold credits, bottom centre, difficult for the audience to ignore. Match on Action as a different shot of which looks like the same moment. Freeze frame of a close up of his face when he comes out of a training program.

Mise en Scene
An empty building with a desk and lots of files on it perfectly ordered, this connotes our main character may be very organised. Perfectly clean shoes shows organised and smart man. A stern look on is face makes him look like he means business and is obviously good at his job. He has a metropolitan police badge to show who he works for. He doesn’t acknowledge anyone even though he has walked passed many people at this point, they are all out of focus which suggest he doesn’t have many friends and is concentrated on only one thing. Lots of shots of him moving quickly and faster than everyone else to show he is more efficient than everyone around him.

Pride And Prejudice Deconstruction

Director:- Joe Wright
Genre:- romantic comedy- drama
Certificate:- U suitable for all
Year:- 2005

Camera shots, Angles, Movement and Composition
Wide shot of nature view, long take. Close up of Keira Knightley reading a book while walking, the camera is following her (dolly shot). The The camera is looking up at her. An over the shoulder shot to show she is well into the book and the bookmarker is old fashioned to again suggest the time set for this movie. A wide shot of where she lives and an extreme long shot of where she is heading. Tracking shot, mid shot of Keira Knightley. The tracking shot stops as it passes a door and then enters. The camera slowly enters the house as if the camera was a character and looks around like a point of view shot. A big pan shot of the room and stops at another door where it starts heading.
Editing
First scene fades in from black. This could represent eyes casually opening as it is early morning. Credits in the middle of the screen to make sure the audience notice them.
Sound
Bird sounds while screen still blank making the audience aware that this scene is set starting outside. The bird sounds first were non-diegetic and once picture fades in becomes diegetic. The sound of a piano playing non-diegetic to show the contrast between the past and present and the sorts of music enjoyed back then. There are cow sounds which look diegetic but must have been added in later. Lots more bird noises which shows that the house is in the countryside. The non-diegetic of the piano playing becomes diegetic as you see the woman playing the piano. The sound of a dog bark as a dog comes into the shot. The sound of the piano is quietened and it has dialog and giggling as two girls run down the stairs. The piano then becomes louder again.
Mise en Scene
Morning natural view of the sun slowly rising. Connotes nature and maybe showing the contrast of the past to the present. Keira Knightley reading shows that she is intelligent and still will the nature and sunlight behind her. . This connotes she is used to the nature and is far more interested in the book. The bridge over murky water and all the animals makes the audience realise that this family may not have much money and the sheets hanging out near the animals’ shows the lack of hygiene and again the contrast of the past and present. You can now fully see what she is wearing and shows the late 18th century time set again . Keira Knightley walking through drying sheets. An untidy background of various animal cages and windows. This shows this family isn’t as well off as probably liked. More animals and now some maids working which connotes that although this family doesn’t have a lot of money, they have enough to pay for maids. Through the open door you can see a woman playing the piano which turns the non-diegetic sound into diegetic. The sun is shining in from the windows and there are old fashion portraits above the girl playing. Another woman enters wearing the same style clothing and holding some sort of fabric which suggests she is sowing and confirms the time period as she looks like a perfect stereotype of a 19th century young lady. Lots of bonnets and other women clothing is on the table connoting the house is full of girls. The candles on the wall suggest there was no electricity in this time period.
