Camera shots, Angles, Movement and Composition

Wide shot of nature view, long take. Close up of Keira Knightley reading a book while walking, the camera is following her (dolly shot). The The camera is looking up at her. An over the shoulder shot to show she is well into the book and the bookmarker is old fashioned to again suggest the time set for this movie. A wide shot of where she lives and an extreme long shot of where she is heading. Tracking shot, mid shot of Keira Knightley. The tracking shot stops as it passes a door and then enters. The camera slowly enters the house as if the camera was a character and looks around like a point of view shot. A big pan shot of the room and stops at another door where it starts heading.

Editing

First scene fades in from black. This could represent eyes casually opening as it is early morning. Credits in the middle of the screen to make sure the audience notice them.

Sound

Bird sounds while screen still blank making the audience aware that this scene is set starting outside. The bird sounds first were non-diegetic and once picture fades in becomes diegetic. The sound of a piano playing non-diegetic to show the contrast between the past and present and the sorts of music enjoyed back then. There are cow sounds which look diegetic but must have been added in later. Lots more bird noises which shows that the house is in the countryside. The non-diegetic of the piano playing becomes diegetic as you see the woman playing the piano. The sound of a dog bark as a dog comes into the shot. The sound of the piano is quietened and it has dialog and giggling as two girls run down the stairs. The piano then becomes louder again.

Mise en Scene 

Morning natural view of the sun slowly rising. Connotes nature and maybe showing the contrast of the past to the present. Keira Knightley reading shows that she is intelligent and still will the nature and sunlight behind her. . This connotes she is used to the nature and is far more interested in the book. The bridge over murky water and all the animals makes the audience realise that this family may not have much money and the sheets hanging out near the animals’ shows the lack of hygiene and again the contrast of the past and present. You can now fully see what she is wearing and shows the late 18^th century time set again . Keira Knightley walking through drying sheets. An untidy background of various animal cages and windows. This shows this family isn’t as well off as probably liked. More animals and now some maids working which connotes that although this family doesn’t have a lot of money, they have enough to pay for maids. Through the open door you can see a woman playing the piano which turns the non-diegetic sound into diegetic. The sun is shining in from the windows and there are old fashion portraits above the girl playing. Another woman enters wearing the same style clothing and holding some sort of fabric which suggests she is sowing and confirms the time period as she looks like a perfect stereotype of a 19^th century young lady. Lots of bonnets and other women clothing is on the table connoting the house is full of girls. The candles on the wall suggest there was no electricity in this time period.
